We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve added three campervans and a Jeep rental to our TAC fleet. Our additional vehicles allow you to find the perfect vehicle for your Colorado Camping needs and beyond. We have a solution for any type of adventure! So how to choose between our 4x4 rentals and campervan rentals? Well here is a quick guide to help you think through the choices. No matter what vehicle you choose, all of TAC’s vehicles come with a camping package that includes all the essentials you’ll need.

Why Rent a Campervan?

Some say #vanlife is the #bestlife, so grab one for your next camping adventure. A campervan provides an amazing advantage over standard car rental, with the creature comforts of a mini camper.

Pros

Campervans allow you to hit the ground running so you can enjoy your trip.

  • Plenty of interior space to hang, cook and sleep

  • Makes dealing with inclimate weather easier (rain, cold, wind)

  • Ability to heat the indoor space

  • Includes a plug-in fridge

  • Requires less dexterity/mobility—no need to climb up a ladder to sleep

  • It’s easy to set up and breakdown your camp—save time by not unloading and loading your vehicle at each campsite. Use that time to soak up every minute of your surroundings!

Trade-offs

Campervans have plenty of pros for your adventure, but there are a few trade-offs to keep in mind.

  • Must stay on maintained roads, no off-roading

  • Less rugged

  • Have to stay closer to the beaten path

  • 2 wheel-drive (snow chains included in winter)

  • 150 miles/day included, extra charge for additional mileage

Ideal Trips

Campervans are great for trips to:

  • National parks

  • State Parks

  • Shoulder season camping with fewer people

  • Established campgrounds

  • Mobile hotel room for visiting mountain towns

  • Festivals

  • Races

Why Rent an Overland Vehicle?

Overland 4x4 vehicles allow you to explore off the beaten path and elevate your car camping experience. It’s a great way to get away from the crowds and camp in some stunning places.

Pros

Overland campervans are made for adventure, and can take you anywhere you want to go.

  • More rugged and adventurous feel—it’s an elevated camping experience, cooking outside, sleeping in a tent (but not on the ground), no interior space to hang out

  • Extremely capable and safe vehicles. You’re able to go where few rental cars can go.

  • Allows you to get further off the beaten path and away from the crowds—you can go off-roading on designated forest service roads that require 4x4 and high clearance (no rock crawling)

  • Unlimited mileage on every TAC Colorado camper van rental

Trade-offs

Overland camping has a few trade-offs to consider.

  • More exposure to inclement weather (no interior space to hang, but we promise our tents will keep you warm and dry

  • Camp set up and breakdown require more work but the unique places you’ll be able to reach make it worth it

  • Requires a climbing ladder to get in and out of bed

  • Limited Mileage

Ideal Trips

You can use the SUVs for the same trips you can take the campervan. In addition, you have more options because you can avoid the crowds and camp off the beaten path.

Here are a few ideas of where you can take the 4x4s Campers:

  • Overlanding trip

  • Colorado mountain passes

  • Dispersed camping on public lands

  • Going off-roading
