Rivian Range

How Far Can You Go on a Single Charge?

The Rivian R1S offers a solid estimated range of up to 370 miles in ideal conditions. Whether you're road-tripping across the desert or cruising through the mountains, this EV has plenty of juice for the long haul. But let’s be real: life on the road isn’t always perfect. Here’s how driving conditions might affect your range:

  • Mountain Driving: When you're tackling those steep inclines, your range can take a hit. But don’t worry, with a little planning, you’ll make it to your next charging stop without breaking a sweat.

  • Off-Roading: The R1S is built to handle rough terrain, but it’s important to note that rugged trails can be a little harder on your battery. Plan for a charging stop if you're taking your adventure off the beaten path.

  • Cold Weather: Winter conditions can lower your range, as batteries tend to perform less efficiently in cold temperatures. Just keep an eye on your battery level, and you’ll still make it to your destination.

  • Camping: Need to power your gear? The Rivian’s large battery is up to the task. From running a fridge to using an air compressor or lighting up your camp, this vehicle can handle it all. But be mindful: heavy battery use at camp will reduce the driving range.

Rivian Chargin Basics

Now that we’ve covered what you can expect from the Rivian's range, let’s talk about charging it up. Whether you’re on the go or at home, knowing your charging options can help you plan your trip without any hiccups.

Types of Chargers:

  1. Level 1 (120V AC): This is your basic household outlet. While it’s convenient, it’s slow—perfect for overnight charging when you have time. Using the Rivian Portable Charger, you will get a few miles of charge per hour.

  2. Level 2 (240V AC): These are faster chargers commonly found at public stations or installed at home. They’ll get your Rivian charged up faster than a standard outlet, making them ideal for overnight or during breaks. You can expect roughly 16-25 miles of range per hour depending on the electrical current available.

  3. DC Fast Charging (Level 3): For the quickest charge, DC fast chargers are the way to go. Depending on the station, they can add anywhere from 250 to 500 miles of range per hour. Perfect for those quick pit stops during your road trips.

  4. Tesla Superchargers: Thanks to Rivian’s compatibility with CCS1 connectors, you can use Tesla’s Supercharger network, too. Simply bring along an adapter and get access to some of the fastest chargers on the market.

Where to Find Charging Stations:

Planning your route is key, especially when you’re traveling off the beaten path. Luckily, there are plenty of apps and resources to help you find charging stations along your journey:

  • Rivian App: The easiest way to track your vehicle’s battery status, locate nearby chargers, and plan your charging stops.

  • A Better Route Planner: This app is a lifesaver for long-distance road trips. It calculates the most efficient route, factoring in charging stations along the way.

  • PlugShare: A user-friendly app that shows charging station locations, types of chargers, and real-time availability.

  • ChargePoint: Another great option for finding charging stations, especially in urban areas.

Charging Costs:

Charging costs can vary depending on where you’re charging and what type of charger you’re using. On average, home charging costs about 10 to 15 cents per kWh, while public charging stations may charge a bit more. As a general rule, the faster the charger, the higher the cost.

What to Do if the Battery Dies

If your battery is running low and you don’t have a charger in sight, don't panic. Here’s what you can do:

  • Get a Tow: Rivian’s roadside assistance can tow your vehicle to the nearest charging station, so you’re never stranded for long.

  • Portable Chargers: While not a full solution, the Rivian comes with an 18' Portable Charger that's designed to plug into a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet for up to 16 miles of charge per hour, or a standard 120V outlet for a few miles of charge per hour.

The Rivian R1S is ready for anything—whether it’s tackling mountain roads, exploring backcountry trails, or keeping your camp powered up. At Titus Adventures, we’re all about Adventure with Impact, and renting a Rivian is one of the most sustainable and exciting ways to explore the world.
