Desert Rock Climbing Near Las Vegas

Top Spots Less than 5-Hours Away

When Colorado's crags freeze over, climbers head south. From our seasonal Las Vegas hub in Henderson, Nevada, you can reach world-class sandstone, limestone, granite and basalt in under five hours. That covers four states, a few thousand routes, and some of the best winter climbing in the country.

Easy to stop at Red Rocks because it is the closest and most obvious spot. But we mapped farther, finding the top climbing areas you can reach in a single day's drive from Henderson, ordered from closest to farthest, so you can string them together into one long road trip or pick a few and explore at your own pace.

The secret to a great desert climbing trip is simple: sleep close to the rock. Wake up at the crag, brew coffee, rack up, and be on the wall while everyone else is still driving in from a hotel.

Loop 1: Red Rock to Zion (the eastern run)

This loop heads northeast up I-15 and stacks four very different crags into one week.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Start in your backyard. Red Rock's sandstone escarpment is the reason climbers fly into Vegas in the first place, with everything from bolted single pitches to long trad objectives.

  • Camp: Red Rock Canyon Campground is open September 1 through May 31 and every site is reserved on Recreation.gov (Recreation.gov).

  • Know this: Timed entry is required for the Scenic Drive from October 1 to May 31 for entry between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (BLM). Roll in before 8 a.m. and you're already at the crag.

Mount Charleston (shoulder-season bonus)

The Spring Mountains rise above the valley with steep, often overhanging limestone and much cooler temps, making them a summer escape for Vegas climbers (Mountain Project). It gets cold and snowy in winter (Common Climber), so plan it for an October or May trip.

Virgin River Gorge

Right where I-15 cuts through the Arizona Strip, the VRG is a winter destination for strong sport climbers. Bring earplugs; the interstate is part of the experience.

  • Camp: The BLM's Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area campground sits in the gorge, about 20 miles southwest of St. George (BLM), with sites reservable on Recreation.gov (Recreation.gov).

St. George, Utah

St. George is packed with crags for every mood. Chuckwalla, Turtle and Prophesy Walls are almost all sport, while Snow Canyon State Park mixes sport and trad (Mountain Project).

  • Camp: Snow Canyon State Park, or BLM land outside town (Mountain Project).

  • Know this: Chuckwalla Wall became part of Snow Canyon State Park in 2024, so a park fee applies (Mountain Project).

Zion National Park

Finish big. Zion's 2,000-foot sandstone cliffs are world famous for big wall and traditional climbing, and bolted sport routes are rare (NPS). Spring and fall are the typical climbing seasons (Recreation.gov).

  • Permits: Day climbs need no permit. Overnight wall climbs need a bivy permit (NPS).

  • Know this: Seasonal raptor closures start March 1 on some walls, so check the park's closure list before you go (NPS).

Loop 2: Joshua Tree and Bishop (the western run)

Point the rig west for granite. This is a longer “loop”, or more of a run.. which is exactly where a rental with unlimited miles pays off.

Joshua Tree National Park

Rough, grippy granite domes scattered among Joshua trees. Fall to spring is prime season (REI).

  • Camp: Hidden Valley Campground is the classic climber camp, with 44 first-come, first-served sites open year-round (NPS).

  • Know this: Hidden Valley has no water (NPS). Fill your tanks before you enter the park.

Bishop, California

The Eastern Sierra's winter climbing capital. Rope up in the Owens River Gorge, a volcanic tuff canyon with over 300 sport routes from 5.6 to 5.13 (Bishop Visitor), or boulder the Buttermilks, reached by driving 7.3 miles west of town and turning onto Buttermilk Road (Bishop Visitor).

  • Camp: The BLM's Pleasant Valley Pit is first come, first served, about 8.5 miles north of Bishop off US-395, and has no water (Recreation.gov).

  • Know this: The Gorge climbs best from late fall through spring (Bishop Visitor).

Know before you go

Never climb wet sandstone.
It is heavily weakened when wet and often takes two or more days to dry (NPS). That applies at Red Rock, St. George and Zion. When it rains, head for granite or limestone.

Book the popular spots early.
Red Rock's timed entry and campground both run through Recreation.gov.

Fill water every chance you get.
Hidden Valley and Pleasant Valley Pit have none.
