Where to Camp During the Fall in Colorado:

When the summer winds down and the days get shorter, you might not be thinking about planning your next camping trip. School starts back up and work begins to hum again. What many people don’t realize is that fall is the perfect time for outdoor adventures. The crowds die down at some of the most popular camping locations and the weather is great for exploring typically hotter areas like the desert. In this post, we’ll give you some of our recommendations and advice for planning a camping trip to keep the adventure spirit alive as the seasons change.
Here’s a few of our favorite areas to visit during September and October:
If you’re interested in visiting Colorado during the fall months, the good news is there’s an endless list of places to explore and things to see.
Aspen - choose one of the 5 trails at Maroon Bells or take the scenic route and drive Independence Pass
Crested Butte - Drive Kebler Pass for sure!
Telluride - experience the epic views of San Juan Mountains from the FREE 12-minute Gondola Ride (runs through mid-October)
The Great Sand Dunes National Park - explore the 4x4 only Medano Pass Primitive Road
Grand Mesa - hike some of the best trails in Grand Mesa National Forest, or enjoy many day activities from mountain biking, to kayaking, canoeing, or fishing.
Estes Park - a cute tourist town that is also the gateway into Rocky Mountain National Park (see our complete Hunting in Colorado Guide for the elk rut)

Fall Color Forecast for 2025
Viewing Colorado’s golden aspen groves at peak fall color is breathtaking, but requires some planning to visit at the right time. The state’s meteorologists are predicting a slightly delayed fall color season. Here’s when you can expect to see peak colors for the different parts of the state:
Sept. 25 – Oct. 8
Steamboat, Flat Tops, Rocky Mountain National Park
Sept. 23 – Oct. 5
Vail, Aspen, Grand Mesa
Sept. 27 – Oct. 17
Sangre De Cristo, San Juan Mountains

Top 3 Tips for Fall Camping
Pack Layers
The high country can have warm and sunny days and chilly nights. It’s not uncommon to see a snow shower or two as we get into October. We recommend you bring some heavier clothes for when the sun goes down and extra blankets for sitting around the fire and your tent.
2. Bring a Propane Fire Pit
Fire bans are a common detriment to camping year-round but can be more prevalent in the fall as the leaves change. During stage two fire bans, you cannot have any open flame outside unless it is fueled by a liquid source and has an “on/off switch”. How can you enjoy a fire in this scenario? Use a portable propane firepit! They are allowed in stage two fire bans and environments that would otherwise not allow for campfires.
We offer a quick heating, no smoke propane fire pit as an add-on for any rental.
3. Use a Heated Sleeping Pad
If you are camping in the high country or late in the fall when it’s cold, a heating sleeping pad can keep you warm and comfortable all night! Spread one out on the bottom of your tent and plug it into a portable battery to extend the temperatures you are comfortable camping in.
We also recommend renting one of our heated campervans during the fall as night time temps can drop quickly.
