Colorado’s Ski Regions
NORTHERN AREA
Known for champagne powder, this area has some large resorts like Winter Park and Steamboat but also smaller ones. Or head into Wyoming!
SOUTH CENTRAL AREA
Enjoy smaller towns in the heart of the Rockies and fewer people. Aspen/Snowmass is a big draw but Monarch and Crested Butte offer amazing experiences.
I-70 AREA
Our most well know and most visited ski areas are along the I-70 highway. They offer easy access and big skiing. Prices can be as steep as the terrain but there are some small gems like Sunlight or Powderhorn to explore.
SAN JUANS AND NEW MEXICO
Skiing in the San Juan Mountains is spectacular. Wolf Creek consistently gets the most snowfall in the state and Telluride has the most stunning scenery. Shake it up a bit with a detour to Taos for great powder and green chile.
WHERE TO WINTER CAMP
This is the part of ski camping that takes some work. Many campgrounds are closed for the season along with dirt forest service roads. Most of the ski areas don’t want you sleeping in the ski parking lots overnight and mountains towns are clamping down on “overnight parking”. While the Walmart is always an option, there are better places to cozy up.
To help navigate all this, have created a detailed guide that will show you where to winter camp in legitimate locations around Colorado and nearby Rockies. Camp confidently and responsibly with our winter guide showing ski areas, nearby campsites (some free, some pay), and local attractions like hot springs to rejuvenate in after a day in the powder! Guide includes ski and snowboarding resorts as well as tons of other winter activities:
Soak in the healing natural hot springs
Try a snowmobile tour
Go snowshoeing
Take a turn as a musher on a dog sled tour
Fly fish with a local guide. Winter can be a great time to fish!
The guide includes a GPS map and e-book that has details about each spot.
We include the full guide with all vehicle rentals.
