Winter Camping FAQS

  • The answer depends on the type of trip you’re taking but most people take a heated campervan and stick to maintained roads. If you’re exploring more remote and rugged areas, a good choice is our heated Tundra Truck Camper, which is high-clearance and 4WD.

For whatever vehicle you pick, we send you out with good snow tires, snow shovel, ice scrapper. For some of our 2WD vans we also send chains for extra traction just in case you hit a big snow storm.

  • You’ll need to pack typical camping attire and gear. In addition, pack more warm clothes including snow boots. Even though you are heading into warmer areas, it will be below freezing some nights and a snow storm is totally possible. If your favorite camping gear is white, then maybe leave it at home for this trip. The desert tends to be dusty, and the red dirt can stain clothes.

  • One of the beauties of going this time of year is that there are a lot less people camping! That means popular campgrounds are less busy, but it also means some are closed during the winter season. The national parks and state parks have good info on their campgrounds. In some areas, you can disperse camp for free on public land and we can help give some tips for that. If you want to stop and ski in Colorado, we have vetted campsites for that too!
